Thoughts

1 Atlanta Braves

(previously: 3)

14-6 The Braves won some important games this past week. They swept the Astros and took two out of three against the Rangers. They deserve the spot now.
2 New York Yankees

(previously: 1)

15-7 The bats cooled off a little for the Yankees, but they will need them for their upcoming games. They have a four-game series against the A’s, but that is followed by a seven-game road trip to Milwaukee and Baltimore.
3 Milwaukee Brewers

(previously: 4)

14-6 Christian Yellich got placed on the 10-day IL with a lower back strain, but that did not stop the Brewers from winning games. They are getting the job done on both sides of the ball. The three-game homestand against the Yankees this weekend should be a telling series.
4 Los Angeles Dodgers

(previously: 2)

13-11 The Dodgers have gone 3-7 in their last 10 games, including losing series to the Nationals and Mets. They get the benefit of the doubt because their lineup is dangerous, but they are on notice.
5 Baltimore Orioles

(previously: 6)

14-7 The young guys are getting good reps at this level, which will benefit the team moving forward. More importantly, they are not losing games even though Holliday is struggling.
6 Philadelphia Phillies

(previously: 11)

14-8 The Phillies swept the Rockies and White Sox, which is what should happen. What should happen does not always happen, and they proved they are still the team we thought they were.
7 Cleveland Guardians

(previously: 9)

16-6 They could be even higher on this list with the best record in the league, but they have played an easy schedule up until now. Let’s reevaluate after the road trip to Atlanta this weekend.
8 Texas Rangers

(previously: 7)

12-11 Their schedule gets easier for the foreseeable future, which should help them get their bats going. They are not even hitting the ball poorly, but expect them to start ramping things up even more.
9 Chicago Cubs

(previously: 8)

13-9 The Cubs are putting runs on the board at an impressive rate, but the pitching could be better. Justin Steele is due back soon and should help them right the ship in that department, but they cannot keep blowing saves.
10 Kansas City Royals

(previously: 10)

13-9 Bobby Witt Jr. was well worth the 11-year $288 million extension and is proving it this season. I would like to see them win a series over a team with a winning record, though.
11 New York Mets

(previously: 20)

12-9 The Mets may have started the season poorly, but they have turned things around. They have won their last five series over the Dodgers, Pirates, Royals, Braves, and Reds, which is mighty impressive.
12 Toronto Blue Jays

(previously: 19)

12-10 The Blue Jays navigated their schedule well over the last week, winning a series over the Yankees and Padres. They have the Royals twice with a three-gamer, with the Dodgers sandwiched between coming up.
13 Tampa Bay Rays

(previously: 14)

12-11 Maybe the top of the order can get things going against the Tigers and White Sox this week. If they do not, it may be time to worry.
14 Cincinnati Reds

(previously: 13)

12-9 Getting swept by the Mariners is never ideal, but they followed that up by sweeping the Angels. They have the Phillies and Rangers this week, and we will see if they are up to the challenge.
15 Boston Red Sox

(previously: 18)

13-10 The pitching staff is easily the best in baseball right now. The Red Sox have a 2.52-team ERA and have three shutouts in the young season. Do not sleep on this team.
16 Arizona Diamondbacks

(previously: 12)

11-12 The Diamondbacks have a +28 run differential but cannot turn that into wins. Their losing record is not indicative of the caliber of baseball, so they get the benefit of the doubt.
17 Detroit Tigers

(previously: 15)

12-10 The bats have not been going yet this season, but their pitching is keeping them afloat thus far. That is not an awful place to be with a young ball squad.
18 San Diego Padres

(previously: 17)

12-12 The Padres are trending in the right direction and have a four-game series with the Rockies that should help their record.
19 Houston Astros

(previously: 16)

7-16 The pitching staff is struggling, and the bats are not getting them wins. 7-16 is not what they had envisioned themselves almost 25 games into the season. It is time to start worrying.
20 Pittsburgh Pirates

(previously: 5)

11-11 That did not last long. The Pirates are 2-8 in their last 10 and have dropped six consecutive. Their offense disappeared and may not come back until after the series with the Brewers.
21 Seattle Mariners

(previously: 23)

11-11 Julio Rodriguez has started to turn things around, but the offense still needs some work. They will get tested in the upcoming weeks.
22 St. Louis Cardinals

(previously: 22)

9-13 Paul Goldschmidt, Nolan Arenado, and company are not doing this pitching staff any favors. They could wind up in the playoffs if they can get their bats going sooner rather than later.
23 Minnesota Twins

(previously: 21)

7-13 The Twins are hitting the ball better than one team: the White Sox. Nothing will change if they cannot score runs.
24 San Francisco Giants

(previously: 25)

10-13 They are 5-5 in their last 10 games, and the bats are not the problem. We will see if they can get their staff some momentum against the Pirates this week.
25 Washington Nationals

(previously: 27)

10-11 The Nationals deserve some love for winning two series against the Dodgers and Astros last week but do not get too excited.
26 Los Angeles Angels

(previously: 24)

9-13 The Angels are 3-7 in their last 10 and continue to flounder as Mike Trout ages. He is not the problem with his eight home runs.
27 Oakland Athletics

(previously: 26)

8-14 The A’s are not the worst team in baseball this season, which has to count for something.
28 Miami Marlins

(previously: 29)

6-17 The Marlins’ record tells the story, and they have a series with the Braves this week. At least tickets will be cheap!
29 Colorado Rockies

(previously: 28)

5-17 The Rockies, Marlins, and White Sox are racing to the bottom, and the Rockies may be the winner.
30 Chicago White Sox

(previously: 30)

3-18 There is not much to say here other than they are pathetic. I would go to a Cubs game instead.
