Thoughts

1 New York Yankees

(previously: 3)

12-4 Hitting is contagious, and no one proves this more than Juan Soto. The Yankees were abysmal offensively last season, but Soto has brought life to the lineup. He is batting .344, and Anthony Volpe, now in the leadoff spot, is batting .382. They also have a 2.78-team ERA, and Gerrit Cole hasn’t made a start.
2 Los Angeles Dodgers

(previously: 2)

11-7 The bottom of the order isn’t hitting the ball, but they continue to win games. Probably because they lead the league with 25 home runs. Dave Roberts will get them playing even better as the season progresses, so I’m not worried about them.
3 Atlanta Braves

(previously: 1)

9-5 Spencer Strider is out for the season after surgery on his elbow. It is a setback, but this lineup leads the league in batting average. They should be active seeking arms for the rest of the season.
4 Milwaukee Brewers

(previously: 13)

10-4 The NL Central is the best division in baseball right now. The Brewers are second in batting average and home runs and have a 3.85 team ERA. Christian Yelich is also playing at an MVP level.
5 Pittsburgh Pirates

(previously: 11)

11-5 The Pirates may be the biggest surprise of the season thus far. They are seventh in batting average and sixth in ERA. Jared Jones looks promising, and Paul Skenes is still waiting in the wings.
6 Baltimore Orioles

(previously: 5)

9-6 The rotation is still short-handed, but they will be healthy soon enough. They are tied in fourth for home runs and have the ninth-best team ERA without Kyle Bradish and John Means. This young ballclub will only get better. Jackson Holliday is also here to stay despite the slow start.
7 Texas Rangers

(previously: 4)

8-8 They are 4-6 in their last 10, with a 3-4 record against the Astros in that span. They also dropped two to the lowly A’s. I wouldn’t panic, but those losses to the Astros could haunt them later in the season.
8 Chicago Cubs

(previously: 6)

9-6 Once again, the NL Central is off to a hot start. Shota Imanaga has not allowed a run through three starts, and Justin Steele is set to return in May. Cody Bellinger has been disappointing this season and should turn things around.
9 Cleveland Guardians

(previously: 14)

10-5 The Guardians deserve some love along with the rest of the AL Central. They have a +29 run differential and have been getting it done without the long ball. They also have the fifth-best ERA in baseball without Shane Bieber.
10 Kansas City Royals

(previously: 16)

10-6 The Royals swept the Astros while scoring 28 runs in the three-game series. They also have a 3.04 team ERA, which is good for third in the league. They may not have been on radars entering the season, but they are now.
11 Philadelphia Phillies

(previously: 8)

8-8 Six games against the Rockies and White Sox should do their offense some good. They have eight quality starts, the third-most, but cannot manufacture runs. That will change.
12 Arizona Diamondbacks

(previously: 12)

8-8 This offense is no joke, especially if Joc Pederson continues to provide quality at-bats. Zac Gallen is the favorite to win the NL Cy Young Award, and they rank top-10 in ERA and batting average.
13 Cincinnati Reds

(previously: 15)

9-6 Nick Lodolo is back and struck out 10 against the White Sox on Saturday. Unfortunately, it seems their division is filled with stellar ball clubs.
14 Tampa Bay Rays

(previously: 10)

9-7 Pitching is still troubling, with a 5.06 team ERA, but they are winning games despite it. They also scored seven runs against Blake Snell in Tropicana Field.
15 Detroit Tigers

(previously: 17)

9-6 They have the league’s fourth-best ERA, but the offense has been sluggish. Spencer Torkelson has not homered yet, but he should turn things around soon.
16 Houston Astros

(previously: 7)

6-11 They won some big games over the Rangers, which will help their confidence. The league’s second-worst ERA (5.32) is worrisome and needs to be fixed sooner than later.
17 San Diego Padres

(previously: 19)

9-9 The Padres just took two games from the Dodgers and should provide them with confidence moving forward. The bats are already going, ranking second in home runs and RBIs.
18 Boston Red Sox

(previously: 9)

9-7 The Red Sox’s hot start on the West Coast cooled off at home. They got swept by the Orioles and dropped one to the Angels before winning the final two of the series. The Guardians will test them this week.
19 Toronto Blue Jays

(previously: 18)

8-8 I do not envy the Blue Jays with their upcoming schedule. They play the Yankees, Padres, Royals, Dodgers, and Royals again. They will get tested, and we will reconvene next week.
20 New York Mets

(previously: 24)

7-8 Pete Alonso and Brandon Nimmo are picking up the slack for the struggling Francisco Lindor. They just took two of three from the Braves and Royals, which has to count for something.
21 Minnesota Twins

(previously: 23)

6-8 They have the league’s worst batting average but the eighth-best ERA. Pitching is what wins in the league, but they have to start scoring runs.
22 St. Louis Cardinals

(previously: 21)

7-9 They are playing in the current best division in baseball, and a mediocre record will not get them anything but last place. Paul Goldschmidt, Nolan Arenado, and company need to start producing runs.
23 Seattle Mariners

(previously: 22)

6-10 They haven’t won a series yet because they are not hitting the ball. The .204 average is pitiful, and Julio Rodriguez is batting .186 with zero home runs.
24 Los Angeles Angels

(previously: 25)

7-8 Mike Trout is still one of the best players in baseball with six home runs, and Taylor Ward is top-five in RBIs batting behind him. They are second behind the Rangers in the AL West, but we need to see if it lasts.
25 San Francisco Giants

(previously: 20)

6-10 Blake Snell got rocked again, and the team is bottom-five in ERA. They have a three-game series against the Marlins this week, but things look bleak.
26 Oakland Athletics

(previously: 29)

7-9 Gotta give credit where it’s due. They are third in the division over the Astros and Mariners. They also have the 12th-best ERA but the second-fewest runs.
27 Washington Nationals

(previously: 27)

6-9 The Nationals have six games against the Dodgers over the next couple of weeks. They could sneak a win in a MacKenzie Gore start but don’t get hopeful.
28 Colorado Rockies

(previously: 26)

4-12 The Rockies have a 6.29 ERA and have a 2-8 record on the road. There is little to look forward to here.
29 Miami Marlins

(previously: 28)

3-13 The Marlins snuck a win off the Yankees and Braves but are bottom-five in ERA and batting average.
30 Chicago White Sox

(previously: 30)

2-13 The White Sox are bottom-five in ERA and batting average while scoring only 34 runs. That is 13 fewer than the next highest, which is pathetic.
