WNBA MVP Futures: Best Odds and Picks – September 2023

WNBA MVP FUTURES BEST ODDS AND PICKS – SEPTEMBER 2023 — Greetings basketball fans. Welcome back to our WNBA MVP tracker here at Godzilla Wins. With the end of the regular season on the horizon, it’s time to see which players are in the running to win the MVP award. When we examined this category back in July, the trio of players that were leading the pack in this field were Connecticut Sun forward Alyssa Thomas, Las Vegas Aces forward A’ja Wilson, and New York Liberty forward Breanna Stewart.

Are these players still head and shoulders above the rest of the league? Let’s find out as we look at the players with he best odds to win this award as the 2023 regular season winds down to its conclusion.

Third-Best WNBA MVP Futures Odds: Alyssa Thomas (+900)

Alyssa Thomas still has the third-best odds to win the award. In a recent outing a few days ago against the Los Angeles Sparks, she finished with a stat line that included 17 points, 10 rebounds, and eight assists on 6-for-11 shooting from the field. This enabled her team to defeat the Los Angeles Sparks 83-68.

Thomas is averaging career highs in points (15.8), rebounds (10.0), and assists (8.1). Simply put, Thomas is a triple-double waiting to happen on any given night. A good example of this occurred back on August 1, when the Sun were playing against the Minnesota Lynx.

Not only did Thomas record the ninth triple-double of her career in less than three quarters of action (21 points, 20 rebounds, and 12 assists), but she also became the first player in WNBA history to record back-to-back triple-doubles in a season.

Additionally, she is the first player in league history to record at least 20 points, 20 rebounds, and 10 assists in a single game. Although the other players on this list have had spectacular seasons in their own right, Thomas has proven why she deserves to be in the conversation this year and for many years to come.

Second-Best WNBA MVP Futures Odds: Breanna Stewart (+100)

Breanna Stewart has been the frontrunner for most of the season. However, she now has the second-best odds to win the MVP award. Stewart – like most great players – tends to put together great performances when her team needs it the most.

For instance, in a recent game against the Las Vegas Aces, she scored 20 points to go along with 12 rebounds and seven assists. Stewart also tallied three steals and two blocks at the defensive end of the court. But one of her best performances took place against the Indiana Fever back on Aug. 13.

In that contest, she scored 42 points, collected six rebounds, and handed out six assists. She shot 15-for-23 from the floor and 5-for-10 from beyond the arc.

Breanna Stewart — Featured Game

In her first season with the Liberty, Stewart is averaging career highs in points (23.0), rebounds (9.3), and assists (3.7). It is also worth mentioning that she is shooting a respectable 46.2 percent from the floor and 36.9 percent from beyond the arc.

While the Aces are the defending champs, Stewart and the Liberty have beaten the top team in the association multiple times this season. And should these two teams make it to the Finals, it will be quite the matchup, to say the least.

Top WNBA Futures Odds: A’ja Wilson (-110)

A’ja Wilson had trailed Stewart for the best odds to win the MVP for most of the season. But as we head down the home stretch, Wilson has compiled some noteworthy performances over the past several weeks that have contributed to her catapulting to the top spot.

In her most recent outing against the Washington Mystics, Wilson finished with 26 points and 11 rebounds on an efficient 10-for-14 from the field. And from a defensive standpoint, she blocked four shots. Wilson also notched a double-double against the Chicago Sky on Aug. 24 as she contributed 18 points and 10 rebounds.

As solid as those performances are, those are not even her best outings this month. On Aug. 11, she helped her team defeat the Mystics 113-89. Wilson scored what was at the time a career-high 40 points on 17-of-25 shooting to go along with 12 rebounds.

A’ja Wilson Featured Game #1

Wilson’s best outing of the season took place just a week ago against the Atlanta Dream. She scorched Atlanta’s defense for 53 points on 16-for-23 shooting from the field. She also converted 20 of her 21 attempts from the charity stripe.

A’ja Wilson – Featured Game #2

And just for good measure, Wilson also grabbed seven rebounds and blocked four shots, proving that she a formidable force at both ends of the floor.

“My teammates kept giving me the basketball in my spaces and I just wanted to return the favor,” Wilson said in an on-court interview. “They tried so hard to get me the ball, and it’s not easy. I think we just tightened up on the defensive end and it helped our offense flow.”

Like the other players on this list, Wilson is averaging career highs in multiple categories, including points (22.1) rebounds (9.5), blocks (2.2), and shooting efficiency (54.5 percent). Wilson was the league’s top player back in 2020. Thanks to her recent stretch of solid play over the last several weeks, it appears that she’s on track to win the award once again.
