Outright Pick for the Indy 500

Outright Pick for the Indy 500

OUTRIGHT PICK FOR THE INDY 500 – At 11:30 EST, make sure you are tuned in for one of the greatest spectacles in sports. Indy cars are hitting the Brickyard for 500 miles of high-speed, high-intensity racing today.

Back for its traditional spot on Memorial Day weekend, the Indianapolis 500 is considered one the of jewels of the racing motorsports schedule. It’s often included in the so-called Triple Crown of racing alongside the 24 Hours of Le Mans and the Monaco Grand Prix (which is also happening today).

In short, if you like guys going fast (like, upwards of 200 mph) in open-wheel race cars, you are going to love this couple of hours.

Qualifying and practice has already happened, so now we’re just waiting to see how things play out once the green flag waves.

I have some thoughts on who I like, and for me it basically all comes down to one driver who I’ll be targeting at a nice price to get the outright win today.

Takuma Sato (+1000)

Yep, that’s right. We are skipping past the presumptive favorites, Alex Palou and Pato O’Ward and rolling with a man who has been absolutely dominant in his career at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Sato isn’t racing as much these days, but he’s always a threat in the Indy 500. We are getting 10/1 odds on a man who has won this race twice (2017, 2020), and has another top-3 in 2019. The record pretty much speaks for itself and you know our guy, Takuma, is going to be in there battling today.

He’s signed to Chip Ganassi Racing this season, which means he will be in excellent equipment for this race, and this partnership is already starting to bear fruit. Sato was absurdly fast in the final practice day on Friday known as “Carb Day” when he ran 86 laps and posted a top average lap speed of 227.855 mph.

It’s not really any secret that he’s been the fastest so far in qualifying and practice, so nobody in-the-know is going to be surprised when you tell them you’re holding a Takuma Sato ticket to win the race. That being said, I think you could do a lot worse than taking a two-time champ at this track, with fast equipment, who is starting towards the top of the grid in 8th.

Let us not overthink this, and get a winner to get a fun day of racing started early. I’ll be back with a Coca-Cola 600 preview later on for all you racing lovers.
