July 31 2023

We went 3-3 Saturday, losing -$235 and shrinking our annual take on MLB to plus +$125. Our overall record is 229-189-1, so we are up for the season while betting $100 per game on the Draft Kings Money line after wagering on 419 games. That seems almost implausible!

We took off Sunday to let the trades play out.

So the Mets unload Max Scherzer to Texas for one of their best prospects. While Mad Max has been inconsistent – and he’s almost 40, it has to benefit the Rangers. He’s a fierce competitor.

Then Texas, in an act of pure unadulterated desperation, mortgages their future for the Card’s Jordan Montgomery and a reliever. I’m shaking in my boots! Not.

Now the question is: what will Houston do? Will they get Justin Verlander back for half the price that Mets owner Steve Cohen paid him ($86 Million for two years). The Dodgers may up the bidding war, but like Max, Verlander has trade veto authority.

I also can see Seattle dealing, as they may be about sunk this season.

I think Houston gets the M’s Paul Seward.

On to some winners for today! I can feel a 4-0 coming and in fact I am betting my first double $200 of the season. I don’t do these until late in the season.

Rays at Yankees (+150)

Aaron Judge is back and the Yankees got embarrassed on national TV last night. New York needs this series or it may be curtains on the season. They trail Tampa by six games in the loss column. It’s now or never! The Yankees are a desperate team at home tonight. The Rays won two of three in Houston, but their July was dismal.

Pick: Yankees (+150)

 Birds at Toronto (-140)

The Blue Jays are another enigma. This is a let-down game for Baltimore against one of the hottest pitchers in the American League in Chris Bassitt. His home ERA is 2.24 with opponents hitting .167 against him. He loves to pitch in the Rogers Center. Hunch bet.

 Pick: Toronto (-140)

Reds at Cubs (-125) – 2x

The Cubbies are hot, winners of eight of nine. I won my first bet on them Saturday night, ending an 0-50 streak dating back to the Bears.

Get this: their average run differential was +2.67 runs in that streak! The Cubs go into tonight just four games behind the Reds! What a turnaround. Wrigley will be rocking! I can’t wait!

I’m going with Marcus Stroman, who finally won a game after three lousy starts.

This is my best bet of the month, and I am going with the Cubs for $200, or laying $250 to win $200. I rarely do this but I like Chicago here.

The Reds are over-valued once again. Watch these Cubbies.

Pick: Cubs (-125 – 2X bet = laying $250 to win $200)

 Cleveland at Astros (-170)

J.P. France has been a beast, going into the eighth inning in his last two starts.

Cleveland does not hit worth a crap, and the Astros have finally got their line-up back to full strength.

After dropping two of three to a fading Rays, they really need a sweep here at home.

The A.L. Central is a clown show, and the Guardians are the Masters of Ceremonies.

 Pick: Houston (-170)
