Thoughts

1 Kansas City Chiefs

(previously: 1)

1-0 The Chiefs avoided overtime by an Isaiah Likely toe. Xavier Worthy looked incredible with his three touches, scoring on two. His speed is a game-changer, especially when you have Patrick Mahomes getting him the ball. Rashee Rice is becoming a star receiver, too, and Mahomes’ favorite target.
2 San Francisco 49ers

(previously: 2)

1-0 Christian McCaffrey was a late scratch for the 49ers, but it did not matter. They looked dominant, especially up front. Jordan Mason ran for 147 yards, and it was because of the dominance of the offensive line. The defense also looked great, holding Rodgers to 167 yards.
3 Detroit Lions

(previously: 4)

1-0 The Sunday night game between the Lions and the Rams was one of the best of the week, and the Lions benefited from the coin toss. They also ran for 60 yards on the drive in overtime, and David Montgomery was impossible to tackle at that point. Amon-Ra St. Brown did not play well, but Jameson Williams stepped up. He should be a big part of this offense moving forward.
4 Dallas Cowboys

(previously: 10)

1-0 The Cowboys picked off Deshaun Watson twice and sacked him six times. The defense looked dominant, with six tackles for loss and 17 quarterback hits. The offense was not as stellar, but they did not need to be, especially with a KaVontae Turpin 60-yard punt return.
5 Philadelphia Eagles

(previously: 5)

1-0 Saquon Barkley was everything the Eagles paid for and more. He ran for 109 yards and two touchdowns and caught an 18-yard touchdown. A.J. Brown caught five balls for 119 yards and a TD. Their offense looked great besides the three Jalen Hurts turnovers. He needs to clean it up if they want to be a Super Bowl contender.
6 Baltimore Ravens

(previously: 3)

0-1 Losing to the Chiefs is not the end of the world, and they narrowly sent it to overtime. Lamar Jackson ran for 122 yards, and Isaiah Likely caught nine balls for 111 yards and a touchdown. Likely caught a touchdown with time expiring, but his toe was barely out of bounds. I would not be too concerned with the lack of output from Mark Andrews and Derrick Henry.
7 Buffalo Bills

(previously: 7)

1-0 The Bills went down early to the Cardinals, but the offense started to click in the second half. They are still a top team as long as they have Josh Allen. They are going on the road to Miami next week and will need Allen to be healthy after injuring his left hand on his final TD.
8 Houston Texans

(previously: 6)

1-0 Joe Mixon and Stefon Diggs showed up in their Texans’ debut. Mixon ran for 159 yards and a TD on 30 attempts, and Diggs caught six passes for 33 yards and two TDs. They only beat the Colts by two points, but a win is a win, especially on the road.
9 Miami Dolphins

(previously: 11)

1-0 Tua Tagovailoa played a clean game on Sunday. He threw for 338 yards and a TD and overcame an awful day on the ground. The Dolphins only gained 81 yards on the ground. Tua got Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle involved early and often, and it was a recipe for a victory.
10 Tampa Bay Buccaneers

(previously: 20)

1-0 The Bucs had 392 yards on offense with zero turnovers against the Commanders. It was certainly a team they should beat, and they did handily. Baker Mayfield played great, going 24/30 for 289 yards and four TDs. They have a tough game next week at Detroit.
11 Pittsburgh Steelers

(previously: 15)

1-0 The Steelers went into Atlanta and did not score a touchdown. Luckily, six field goals were enough to win the game. Russell Wilson did not play, so Justin Fields started. He did not light it up but did not turn the ball over. T.J. Watt was also everywhere on the field and is still the best defensive player in the league.
12 Los Angeles Rams

(previously: 12)

0-1 It may have been a loss, but it was not bad. An overtime loss on the road in Detroit is not the desired outcome, but they did good things in the game. Puka Nacua left the game early, and Cooper Kupp caught 14 balls for 110 yards and a TD. Conditioning seemed to be a big weakness but is fixable.
13 Seattle Seahawks

(previously: 21)

1-0 Mike Macdonald won in his debut, but they did not do great on offense. Denver scored with two minutes left to cut the lead to six, which made it look closer than it was. Ken Walker looked like a workhorse back, and Tyler Lockett played well with Patrick Surtain shadowing DK Metcalf.
14 Green Bay Packers

(previously: 9)

0-1 The Packers dodged a bullet when Jordan Love got injured on the final drive. He sprained his MCL and will not go on IR, which is a positive sign. A close loss to the Eagles in Brazil is not the end of the world either.
15 New York Jets

(previously: 14)

0-1 Aaron Rodgers looked a little rusty against the stellar 49ers’ defense. He only threw for 167 yards and had an interception. I will not read too much into a loss at San Francisco, but they need to play better at Tennessee next week.
16 Los Angeles Chargers

(previously: 22)

1-0 J.K. Dobbins stole the show on Sunday. He carried the ball 10 times for 135 yards and a TD and caught all three targets. Justin Herbert did a great job managing the game with stellar defensive play. It will be interesting to see how this team evolves with Jim Harbaugh.
17 Cincinnati Bengals

(previously: 8)

0-1 The Bengals got upset and lost their home opener to the Patriots. Ja’Marr Chase played, but missing all of training camp is not ideal. Tee Higgins did not play, and they could have used him. They have a tough game at Kansas City next week.
18 Chicago Bears

(previously: 17)

1-0 The Caleb Williams era started with a victory, but not because of him. They did not score an offensive point, but the team got the job done. Williams only threw for 93 yards but did not turn the ball over. He will have to perform better if they want to beat the Texans in Houston next week.
19 Indianapolis Colts

(previously: 18)

0-1 The Colts can take a lot of positives from the loss to the Texans. Richardson made a few big throws and displayed his physicality on the goal line. Jonathan Taylor did not play well, rushing 16 times for 48 yards. They get Malik Willis and the Packers next week, which is a break.
20 New Orleans Saints

(previously: 26)

1-0 The Saints dominated the Panthers, but most teams will this season. We will see next week if the Saints are the real deal when they travel to Dallas. Alvin Kamara looked pretty good, rushing for 83 yards, one TD, and adding 27 yards in the air.
21 Arizona Cardinals

(previously: 24)

0-1 Marvin Harrison Jr. was almost nonexistent in his debut. He only caught one pass for four yards, but Kyler Murray missed running wide-open on the final drive of the game. The defense will not be good this season, but the offense can hang around with most teams in the league.
22 Jacksonville Jaguars

(previously: 16)

0-1 Trevor Lawrence has all the intangibles but does not win games. They were up 17-7 at halftime and did not score another point. Brian Thomas Jr. looked like the real deal, catching four balls for 47 yards and a TD.
23 Atlanta Falcons

(previously: 19)

0-1 Kirk Cousins did not look like himself, but it is understandable, returning from an Achilles injury. It was an awful matchup, too. T.J. Watt made his life difficult. The defense looked solid, not allowing a TD all game. This team will get better as Cousins gets his feet under him.
24 Cleveland Browns

(previously: 13)

0-1 Deshaun Watson is likely not the answer, and I would not be surprised if Jameis Winston is not playing quarterback in a couple of weeks. The locker room seems to be turning on Watson, which is not ideal.
25 New England Patriots

(previously: 31)

1-0 The Patriots stunned the NFL world by beating the Bengals. The defense looked amazing, holding Burrow to 164 yards and forcing two turnovers: one on the goal line and one on a punt return. Jacoby Brissett did not turn any heads, but he can be a game manager if the defense continues stellar play. Rhamondre Stevenson rushing for 120 yards and a TD also does not hurt.
26 Minnesota Vikings

(previously: 23)

1-0 Sam Darnold led the Vikings to a victory over the Giants, but that only counts for so much. The defense looked outstanding, but most defenses do against Daniel Jones. We will reevaluate after they play the 49ers at home next week.
27 Tennessee Titans

(previously: 25)

0-1 Will Levis made some bad plays that led to the Titans blowing a 17-point lead. He turned the ball over three times, including a pick-six, which surrendered the lead.
28 Washington Commanders

(previously: 27)

0-1 Jayden Daniels ran for 88 yards and two TDs but only threw for 184 yards. He fumbled three times but did not lose any of them. It was an encouraging debut, but the defense did not show up. The secondary was torched by the Buccaneers, but they get the Giants at home next week.
29 Denver Broncos

(previously: 30)

0-1 Bo Nix did not have a great debut, throwing two picks. It was not all bad, especially playing in Seattle. He scored on the ground with two minutes left to cut the lead to six.
30 Las Vegas Raiders

(previously: 28)

0-1 The defense did not look terrible but got worn down after three turnovers from the offense. They need a lot of help on offense, and it may be another bad outing next week at Baltimore.
31 New York Giants

(previously: 29)

0-1 Daniel Jones threw another pick six, and the defense got routed by the Sam Darnold-led Vikings. Things are not great in New York.
32 Carolina Panthers

(previously: 32)

0-1 Bryce Young threw an interception on his first pass of the season. They only picked up 11 first downs, which sums up the Panthers’ first game.
